BTW awesome recap. And a lot of courageous effort by a lot of progressive real estate agents to bring our industry into the computer age (may I say finally?). Kudos to all involved.

Wow, there are land mines all over the place right now.
The best part of real estate, for me, is learning from the truly brilliant trailblazers in the industry. Unfortunately they are as rare as a flawless diamond, but I'm drawn to the light of the events they attend, and to their blogs, like a bee to honey. Thanks for this juicy honeycomb of the Queen's honey.

So many latecomers and problems with semantics.

It appears you are referring only to bloggers in your brief piece "A six year history of the RE.net" above, and yet, "re.net" really seems more like all real estate on the Internet.

What is blogging on the Internet, then? Would it include agents who were on the Internet very early and wrote and posted their own websites, not needing a Wordpress or ActiveRain website to help them with html?

If the answer to the second question is yes, then blogging preceded the coining of the word and the brief history above. It did not begin six years ago and it did not begin in 1995. It began when the Internet first went commercial and a trailblazing real estate company posted its first website, thereby receiving flames and referrals galore.

We also shared our html with other agents in our franchise at the time, and as a result, many new companies went online within weeks of the class. Those days are long gone and there are probably more agents on the Internet than not, either paying too much for websites or getting caught up in social networking and blogs.

The Internet has an overabundance of agents now and talk is cheap, but service to the customer still is paramount. A constantly-updated blog alone does not make a good Broker. Deals do, competence does and service does.

I can't believe my Tweets about Squirrel Stew and Topless Driving in Carolina didn't make RE.net history. Jeez. ;-p But then again, I'm all about the "lighter side." Love you ALL! (& P.S. I really don't care about making history. I just care...)

Thanks for the memories Todd. When a 10 year history of RE.net is written, this week will be remembered as "Piling on Todd" week and how he responded with grace and professionalism.

@TheRECoach, I absolutely agree. Mike and Brad are awesome. As I said at the beginning of this post, I simply didn't have time to include everyone. Mary McKnight is a great example, as is Jeff Corbett.

Thanks to everyone for continuing to comment.

[...] Did You Ever Wonder Where Social Media Got it’s Start? I don’t know if it’s 100% accurate, I don’t think anyone has actually done that, but I do know it’s a very good timeline of Social Medias growth points. I am speaking of a great post (that must have taken a long time to write, but is very short and to the point), by Todd Carpenter (@tcar), NAR’s Social Media Director, today on realtynex.us [...]

Love this look back tcar. I would like state for the record however, pertaining to REBarcamp SF 2008, it would not have been possible without a number of fine RENet insiders including: Mike Price of MLBroadcast.com & Brad Coy of SFRes.com., who were "instramental" in it. I know that neither of them would seek out this recognition, but I do know they deserve it. :-)

Huge congrats on 5 years... Definitely more than a few ups-and-downs, but must say I've had way way way more fun with the community that's built up over the years than I ever could have expected when I first asked to take part in your real estate list. Great stuff.

Seems funny that the story starts about the time the first pins started to burst the housing bubble, and critical mass was reached in 2006 when housing market meltdown was eminent. A lot of people in the RE business have had a lot more time on their hands than ever before. The future of the RE.net is dependent on how many working agents get fully productive again, and how many hang back to blog and tweet about it.
